The word missional is new in its usage but the concept is key to all churches. Missional simply means to be on mission with God. The mission of God, in our context, is to love the people in the Triangle; so, Vintage21 exists to bring Christ to our city. How can we accomplish this best? Where should we hold worship services? How will we care for people? As we asked these questions, God led us to the downtown area of Raleigh. The needs here are tremendous. The urban context of Raleigh is emerging on the creative front, the business sector, the entertainment industry and people are flocking to live downtown.
As this downtown area grows, there is one noticeable absentee—the Church. Many churches in downtown Raleigh are declining or at best plateaued. New church plants are popping up all over the suburbs, as the perceived growth is there alone. These two problems leave the heart of our city void of growing churches who are focused on bringing people to Christ. This is the call that God has laid on us—build the local church and redeem a people group. We believe moving into the warehouse district of downtown Raleigh, in the building formerly used by Jillian's nightclub, is going to offer us an amazing opportunity to love these people.
People are already talking about a church in a nightclub. We love this picture! We think it is a great symbol of redemption—God using a building that was once the source of great fun and great brokenness to a place that loves life and restores wholeness. This location will allow us to host events for Sparkcon, a local creativity conference, host First Friday art walks and allow local bands a venue to play shows. This new building gives us credibility with the downtown scene as their interests and needs are the same as ours. Our church is thrilled with this opportunity as the list of possible ways to love the city is endless.
